You’ve heard of Pride and Prejudice, well this is Plied and Prejudice, and I guarantee you will have a ball.
This immersive show has multi-roling, audience participation, free flowing drinks brought by the servants, cameos from Kiera Knightley (not the real one), and of course, THAT wet shirt scene from Mr Darcy.
From the minute you walked into The Vaults Theatre you were immediately transported to the world of Pride and Prejudice with set design by Penny Challen. It was like walking on to the set of Bridgerton but a slightly warped Bridgerton at that. The entrance and foyer had been completely covered with Regency Era scenery but it was all 2D with a cartoon effect which gave a great insight into what the night ahead would provide.
They really gave it that extra Bridgerton touch by having musicians playing classical arrangements of your favourite songs whilst you were sipping on your drink of choice, ready to go in.
So, on to the show. Well it was a 90 minute whirlwind through the world of Pride and Prejudice and once it began, it did not stop. So much so that if you wanted to keep up the drinking during the show (which was greatly encouraged), everyone had QR codes in front of their seats, and so you could keep your glasses full without missing any of the action.
This incredibly well written show was created by Matthew Semple, with direction by Dash Kruck and was very well curated to pack in so much story into such a short space of time. However, the most impressive thing was that this story normally has about 20 main characters and yet this cast was only made up of 5 actors. The actors were having to play multiple characters all in one scene which made for some incredibly funny moments.
Now this show would not have been as successful as it was without the brilliant cast carrying us through this whistle stop tour of the Jane Austen novel.
Brigitte Freeme Monique Sall, Emma Andreatta, Timothy Walker and Andrew Macmillan all played their parts fantastically with constant switching of accents and physicality to convey all the different characters. There was not a single weak link in this cast and everyone played all of their many characters exceptionally. The two understudies, Alexia Brinsley and Zak Enayat also did a great job getting everybody in the party spirit before the show began even having a dance off with some of the audience.
If you want a crazy immersive night at the theatre then The Vaults Theatre is the place to be.
Plied & Prejudice runs at The Vaults, London Waterloo until 18th May. Tickets from 19. Available from https://pliedandprejudice.com/london/
