When Britain’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent All Star’s finalist Tom Ball made his big reveal as Noodle the cat on BGT last year, unveiling his dramatic makeover, there was no doubt he’d transformed from a baby-faced, jolly drama teacher to a bonafide recording artist and star.
Tom’s incredible ‘glow up’ in the intervening years after his original BGT appearance, was all in preparation for this moment. He is currently on his first ever UK solo tour, he has announced the release of his debut album Curtain Call, which will be released on Westway Music on May 24, and his brand new self-penned single The Best Part, is released on March 29.
The result of his amazing transformational journey, the album Curtain Call consists of 13 tracks that show Tom’s incredible vocal range as both a performer and interpreter of songs, as well as a writer.
This prodigious scope has led to comparisons to the likes of Michael Buble and Michael Ball; both multi-faceted entertainers with the unique ability to do it all.
Curtain Call features a mix of both covers (including the likes of Stand By Me, Feeling Good, and of course Writing’s On The Wall which started his BGT journey) and original songs. These include six that multi-instrumentalist Tom has penned, alongside Grammy and Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriters and producers such as Eliot Kennedy and Gary Barlow.
”I knew certain songs had to be in there for myself as well as for my fans,” he says of the 85 million views his performances have had online. ”Writing’s on the Wall had to be the first track on the album; it’s where it started with BGT and changed my life. It made sense to top the album with that and tail the album with the last song I sung on BGT, I (Who Have Nothing).”
The six original songs are even more personal, reflecting on his relationship with his wife Hannah, a pediatrics nurse and also his battle with type 1 diabetes, which he was diagnosed with when he was just eight years old. The first original single to be released is The Best Part, a feel-good uplifting pop song, which perfectly embodies Tom’s journey of the last two years, where he’s been travelling the world, but always missing home.
Recorded at Umbrella Sound studios in London, Curtain Call also features a stunning collaboration with West End star Lucie Jones ”I wrote the song Goodbye with Mike Stevens and Jay James. The song is thankfully not related to me in any way, as it’s about a relationship that’s broken down. We knew we wanted it as a duet and Lucie Jones is absolutely sensational. I’ve seen her in the West End in Waitress and Les Mis, and I’m so honoured to have her on the album.”
This hotly anticipated and thoughtfully conceived album has been years in the making predating BGT, and the product of a youngster who fell in love with musical theatre at eight years old. Tom went on to gain a degree at the well-respected Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, but despite achieving top awards and the much coveted ‘Ian Fleming Award for Musical Theatre’, Tom, like many, nearly fell through the cracks. Although he set his sights on teaching, which he loved, he decided to give his dream one last go with his application to Britain’s Got Talent.
His first TV experience on BGT saw him described as ‘the best singer Britains Got Talent has seen in 16 years’ by Amanda Holden. Tom’s charisma, infectious energy and talent was clear, and this seeps through in bucket loads on this remarkable debut album.
